Belaying Workshop

Dear Members

The Committee have arrange for a belaying workshop for parents. The need for this training was recently discussed in the Committee to ensure parents are given the opportunity to up-skill and be fully trained to belay all Club Members. The session is not compulsory however the Committee would recommend those who are, or would like to learn how to, lead belaying to take part.

The workshop will take place on Sunday 18 November 2018 in Awesome Walls, it will be a two hour session with a 2:1 ratio with the instructor. The goal is to take a look at, deconstruct and reconstruct belaying indoor lead climbing and belaying in general. During the two hours we will delve into belaying best practice (safety), rope management, belayer space management, dynamic belaying, belaying risk zones and how to change belaying styles accordingly, belaying positioning and belaying psychology. Good belaying and a broader understanding of what constitutes good belaying allows the lead climber to have absolute confidence in the belayer (therefore enabling them to climb to their potential) and it allows the belayer to feel relaxed and comfortable.

The cost of the workshop will be twenty five Euros (€25) per participant for the two hours. If you would like to take part please complete the registration form below:

Due to the ration of 2:1 there are a limited number of spaces available for this training, eight spaces in total. Priority will be given to those who have not previously received training and are belaying those in Youth Category C or older. If there is sufficient demand another session will be organised.

Monday Coaching Sessions

Dear Member

As previously discussed the Monday Night Coaching sessions are being structured. The first term is now open for registration. This term will be for seven (7) weeks, please see the list of dates below.

  • Monday 5 November 2018
  • Monday 12 November 2018
  • Monday 19 November 2018
  • Monday 26 November 2018
  • Monday 3 December 2018
  • Monday 10 December 2018
  • Monday 17 December 2018

The members will be split into two groups and each group will be allocated a one hour session with the coach. Each group will need to be supervised by parents to ensure the members are getting the best they can from the session. More parents will be required on the boulder floors as opposed to the roped floor.

A rota of parents, from those signed up for the sessions, will be drawn up for each week. It is the parents responsibility to cover a session they are due to. If they can not they must ensure another parent agrees to cover the session on their behalf. Other parents will be required to ensure children do not run around, parents on the Rota will have to focus on those on the wall.

The cost of the Term will be thirty five euro (€35), per member for the full session, the full amount will need to be paid in advance on the first night. Once registered you are committing to the above dates, if for any reason you missed a session the Committee will not be in a position to issue a refund.

Angles versus load

I found this video on YouTube. It goes through angles and load for rigging anchors, i.e. for say top ropes outdoors. It shows very nicely how the change in angle affects the load on each one. One caveat is he only uses two anchor points, and we now use three,  but it is good all the same.
